One-Day Retreat for Personal Renewal
Suggested Schedule for a One-Day Retreat
Focus: Personal Renewal
Suggested things to bring: Bible, journal or notebook, favorite music and CD player, book of prayers or a classic devotional book .
| 8:30a-10a | Morning Prayers
Quiet yourself. Become aware of God' presence in and around you. Using your journal, list things for which you are thankful. Write
the list without extensive reflection, just write. Using your journal, list people for whom you can intercede. Again,
just write the names that God brings to mind. Using your journal, write down the areas in your life in which
you are not living as God has invited you to live. List struggles
with sin in all its forms, possibly using the Seven Deadly Sins
as a guide (Pride, Envy, Anger, Sloth, Greed, Gluttony, Lust). Quiet yourself and listen to anything else God may say to you. Write down anything that may be revealed. |
| 10a-Noon | Get outside.
Take a walk, take a bike ride, go sit on a park bench, go for a run, rent a kayak. Pay attention to your surroundings. Continue to be aware of God's presence in the world around you. Continue to listen for God's voice. |
| Noon - 12:30p | Enjoy lunch. Don't read while eating or rush through the meal. Maintain the spirit of quiet and rest. |
| 12:30p-1:30p | Rest. Lay down and listen to music. Take a nap and don't set an alarm. Sit in a hot tub. |
| Afternoon Ideas | Read the devotional book you brought and let the book speak. If you read one page and want to stop and meditate on that page, do it. If you enjoy the book and want to finish it, do that. Commit Psalm 139 to memory. Make a list of things you'd like to do before you turn 40 or 50 or 60 or.. If married, consider how you can demonstrate your love to your spouse in ways she/he would appreciate. Pray for your marriage, for your spouse, for your future. Write a letter to your spouse telling him/her what your hopes are for your marriage. If a parent, consider the personalities of your children and how each has led you to a better understanding of God. Write a letter to each child telling him or her of the impact each has had on your faith and life. If your parents are alive, think of their impact on your faith. Consider writing a letter to each parent telling them what they have taught you. |
| Evening Ideas | Enjoy another quiet meal and imagine God as your dining
partner. What else do you and God need to say to each other?
Before you leave, note any final insights or questions in your journal. |
