“What Can the Righteous Do?”

Nelson, Douglas E.

unpublished sermon, 1974

Nelson comments on Psalm 11:3 “When the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” He writes this: “It is impossible to know just what crisis was confronting this unknown poet. Perhaps in Jerusalem it was one of those sordid times when everything had gone rotten. The men in power were men who could play with all the human decencies like toys. Behind the majesty of the courts, graft. In the heart of the church nothing but a narcotic ritual. Everywhere a man looked he saw all the wrong things working smoothly and all the right things good for nothing but a giggle.”
