Introduction
The Bible’s first book is as familiar to most churchgoers as any part of Scripture. Or so people think. As with so much of the Old Testament, a key challenge to preaching on Genesis is to move people beyond Sunday school caricatures and simplifications so as to get at the gritty, startling nature of these stories. Sometimes a way to approach these passages and stories in a fresh way is to ask good questions. What follows is a sampler of some questions that may spark new ideas in your imagination (and lead to other, even better, questions to ask!):
- In Genesis 1, what do we learn when we notice that God created light before the sun and produced green plants also before there was said to be a sun?
- What does God do regarding all those “waters” and how does this relate to what later happens in Genesis 6-9?
- Why does the account of creation differ so markedly between Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 (and what does that tell us about the nature of these accounts)?
- Compare Genesis 6:5 with Genesis 8:21. Why does God’s observation of the same phenomenon lead to anger in chapter 6 but grace in chapter 8?
- How can it be that Abram obeys God so swiftly in Genesis 12 but then sputters and fails so much in subsequent chapters? (And what does that tell us about the nature of grace?)
- Wasn’t it risky to put the scandalous story of Genesis 22 so early in the Bible?
- Why does God favor Jacob when he’s clearly such a trickster and crook?
- What is behind Jacob’s outburst in Genesis 33:10 that Esau’s face reminds him of the face of God?
- Is Joseph really the innocent naif we usually imagine, or was he initially a bit arrogant and condescending toward his brothers? (That is, did he REALLY think that reporting his dreams would sit well with the rest of the family?)
- How is the whole Book of Genesis summed up and dramatically climaxed when old Jacob crosses his hands in blessing in Genesis 48:14?
